Rievaulx Abbey

Rievaulx Abbey

Rievaulx Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in Rievaulx, near Helmsley in the North York Moors National Park,North Yorkshire, England. Headed by the Abbot of Rievaulx, it was one of the wealthiest abbeys in England until it was dissolved by King Henry VIII of England in 1538. Its ruins are one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in the area.

In 2016, visitors will be able to enjoy a new Museum displaying objects that shed light on the uniqueness of Rievaulx and the fascinating people who founded and developed the Abbey. Alongside this we are creating  an enlarged visitor café complete with views over the Abbey, a more free-flowing visitor reception and improved shop and toilet facilities.

Message from English Heritage

"The Abbey will be open to visitors throughout the work but we encourage drivers to park in the nearby village of Helmsley, located just 3 miles away, and take advantage of the beautiful walking route along the scenic Cleveland Way due to reduced parking on site. We'll be providing a light range of refreshments until our new facilities open in May 2016."
