History

History

helmsleymarket

The Feathers Hotel is formed from two distinct buildings. The Pickwick Bar is one of the oldest buildings in Helmsley and is timber framed. It was originally known as Thorpe's Cottage and the panelling on the eastern wall is reputed to have come from the nearby Castle. It probably once had a thatched roof, though not in recent times.

The larger building was once the most expensive residence in Helmsley before latterly becoming a coaching inn.

In the 1950's, Robert Thompson the famous 'Mouseman of Kilburn' was instructed to work at The Feathers. You will find lots of his carved wooden mice hidden around the Feathers. It is said that the Pickwick Bar was the largest single piece of oak he worked on.

The Feathers was purchased by a local family in 2003 who owned and ran the hotel, along with the sister hotel, The Golden Fleece, Thirsk, before being taken over by the Coaching Inn Group in October 2015.
